The Role of Clouds in Coral Bleaching Events Over the Great Barrier Reef

نویسندگان

چکیده

Thermal coral bleaching events (CBEs) over the Pacific, including those Great Barrier Reef (GBR), have commonly been linked to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), with reported be a direct result of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies driven by Niño. However, such relationship cannot explain CBEs that occurred during La Niña or neutral phase ENSO. Here, we show GBR is characterized significant negative correlation between total cloud cover anomaly (TCCA) and lagged SST (SSTA) whose magnitude spatial extent are greater than SSTA-ENSO correlation. This TCCA-SSTA (lagged) prevails two-thirds study domain even after ENSO signal removed, which suggests local-scale reduced key component regional warm shallow water formation occurrence thermal CBEs.

Surviving Coral Bleaching Events: Porites Growth Anomalies on the Great Barrier Reef

Mass coral bleaching affected large parts of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in 1998 and 2002. In this study, we assessed if signatures of these major thermal stress events were recorded in the growth characteristics of massive Porites colonies. In 2005 a suite of short (<50 cm) cores were collected from apparently healthy, surviving Porites colonies, from reefs in the central GBR (18-19°S) that h...

Atsr Maps Coral Bleaching on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef

The Australian Great Barrier Reef (GBR) experienced its most intensive and extensive coral bleaching event on record in early 1998 [1]. This period also saw extensive damage to other reefs around the globe. There is concern among environmental scientists and GBR-based industries, especially tourism, that widespread death and bleaching of corals caused by extremely high temperatures during 1997-...

The Semantic Reef: Managing Complex Knowledge to Predict Coral Bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef

A semantically driven Virtual Organisation (VO) model for predicting important events for coral reefs is presented – the Semantic Reef. The model is an application of a Semantic Grid that encapsulates services and resources to produce a complex higher-level knowledge base in order to predict coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef. The goal is to enable the synergistic interplay between diffe...

Recolonisation of Acropora hyacinthus following climate-induced coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef

Given projected increases in the frequency and/or severity of climatic disturbances, the persistence of corals may be more a function of their capacity for regeneration than resistance to such episodic disturbances. If so, climate change may favour those corals that regenerate fastest following acute disturbance. The tabular coral Acropora hyacinthus is fast-growing and typically dominates shal...
